This song was written before the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan, which in many ways predicted the outcome. The US has had strong military interests in the region since Cold War times during the Reagan Era. It was in the 80's that the US government funded the Mujahedeen militants to fight Russian occupation in the region, which set off a chain of events that led to the dissolution of the Soviet Bloc.
But instead of rolling over and dying, this same Mujahedeen under the name Taliban would then cause the 9/11 attacks under Bush, which gave way to the second Gulf War and the War on Terror. From this point Afghanistan would never be the same. For the next 30 years, the people were caught between the 'rock' of the US military and the 'hard place' of Afghanistan under the threat of the Taliban.
With the recent withdrawal, those same people caught between have died and will continue to die, as the land has been used as a battle ground for the US and its competitors over decades.
lyrics
For the service which they bestowed
Is the prize of insecurity and fear
They’ll all die soon
As the children wave off the troops
Their parents mull over their fate
